The Montgomery County History Conference will take place on October 19 at Montgomery College's Rockville Campus, offering an array of activities for history enthusiasts. The conference will include: A keynote address by author Scott Shane on the life and legacy of Thomas Smallwood, a local man who escaped slavery and organized mass escapes for others. Nine breakout sessions with diverse topics such as the Horad family's story, Latvian immigration, Josiah Henson's life, fifty years of Peerless Rockville Historic Preservation, mid-century religious architecture, hip hop history, Bethesda Big Train Baseball, indigenous archaeological research, and more. A documentary screening of Ten Days in September 1956, which tells the story of the integration of Poolesville High School, followed by a panel discussion. A happy hour reception to conclude the conference. Students can attend at a discounted rate by emailing proof of student status to Mgagle@MontgomeryHistory.org, and scholarship opportunities are available for those who need financial assistance.
